Guide to Funeral Directors in Adelaide
Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia, with over 1.3 million people living here. More than 75 per cent of South Australia’s population lives within Greater Adelaide. There are around 18 funeral directors in Adelaide, providing funeral arranging services to bereaved families and individuals across the city’s 18 local government areas.
Funeral directors in Adelaide often have extensive experience catering to different religious and cultural requirements, with a significantly high proportion of residents born overseas. Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese and Afghanistani residents are among the 30 per cent Adelaide’s community who were born outside Australia, while the highest proportion of overseas-born residents arrived from the UK.
As a result of this multiculturalism, and thanks to Adelaide’s history as a place of religious tolerance, there are many different faiths represented in the city and Adelaide funeral directors are likely to have experience offering funeral services to these different religions. A fifth of Adelaideans are Catholic, roughly 12 per cent Anglican, and 3.5 per cent Eastern Orthodox. Jewish and Muslim communities have been well established within the city since the mid 1800s, with the Central Adelaide Mosque being the oldest mosque in Australia.
Serving these different communities are several burial grounds in and around the city of Adelaide. The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority oversees the management of four burial grounds; Cheltenham Cemetery, Enfield Memorial Park, Smithfield Memorial Park and West Terrace Cemetery. Apart from traditional burial and cremation options, Smithfield and Enfield also offer natural burials, and the latter has a dedicated Buddhist garden. West Terrace is one of the oldest capital city cemeteries in Australia, with burial and cremation options still available.
Apart from those facilities run by the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority, there are burial grounds such as North Road Cemetery, open to all Christian denominations, Dudley Park and Payneham cemeteries. Centennial Park, which caters to all beliefs, offers three non-denominational service chapels and a viewing room.
